THE ANDREA ADAMS TRUST

Registered as a National Charity No. 1064539 and a Company Limited by Guarantee No. 03427802.

THE HISTORY OF THE TRUST

Andrea Adams, broadcaster and journalist, was the first person to recognise the significance of workplace bullying, and her book entitled ‘Bullying at Work’ published by Virago in 1992, remains a landmark in this field. Andrea’s tragic early death in 1995 left a legacy of many people affected by her personality and her work. They felt deeply that her contribution must not be forgotten and that the work she had started must be continued. They became the founding members of the Trust in June 1996. In setting up the Trust to carry on Andrea's work, it was their intention to fill the gap that she had left and to become the natural focus for the diverse needs the agenda inevitably elicited by this emotive topic which touches so many people.

The Trust was launched as a non-political, non-profit making charity in June 1997.

The Andrea Adams Trust is the world's first non-political, non-profit making charity operating as the focus for the diverse and complex problems caused by bullying behaviour in the workplace.

WHAT IS WORKPLACE BULLYING?

When we talk about bullying at work we are referring to an abuse of power or position. It is offensive discrimination through persistant, vindictive, cruel or humiliating attempts to undermine, criticise, condemn, and to hurt or humiliate an individual or group of employees

It can make employees lives a misery, affect their performance and damage their careers. It can also have a serious impact on organisations: indeed, statistics show that each year as many as 18.9 million working days are lost to bullying and up to a half of all stress-related illnesses are a direct result of bullying.

WHAT MAKES US UNIQUE?

The Trust works to reduce the incidence of workplace bullying by promoting a wider understanding of the issue and by providing a professional source of information, consultancy advice and help.

Through the Trust:-

EMPLOYEES - who have experienced the effects of bullying at work can find immediate and practical support

EMPLOYERS - who wish to build healthy corporate cultures, in which the bully will not thrive, can access specialist training and consultancy advice.

WE DON'T TAKE SIDES - We identify and separate the core problem from the emotional content in pursuit of a positive outcome, promoting a win/win situation to mutual benefit, whereby the individual retains his/her job and the organisation retains its staff and litigation is avoided.
